The large, imposing enclosure of this wall-hung cabinet cuts the viewer off from the outside world and creates a contemplative space that focuses their attention solely on experiencing the piece. The whimsical, figurative “parachute” form and playful origami cranes place the viewer off-guard and contrast with the heavy subject matter. Each crane bears the name of a United States Marine who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. The process of handwriting the names of these individuals and ritualistically folding the origami cranes is a meditative exercise that gives reverence for those whose sacrifices society often overlooks and hopes to confer the peace, hope, and healing that the origami crane symbolizes to those whose loved ones were taken too soon.
